ABOUT OUR

Residency Program: Didactics

The Providence St. Mary Medical Center ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency program is designed to graduate competent, compassionate, and professional physicians who deliver high-quality, humanistic care. Our comprehensive educational program covers multiple internal medicine and patient-care disciplines to prepare our residents for full licensure and unsupervised practice.

The curriculum complies with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for a residency in Internal Medicine. We designed our eighteen-month program to expose each resident to the curriculum twice. The didactics curriculum includes:

Description

Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds are monthly conferences that emphasize cutting-edge medical science within our own institution as well as by nationally-recognized leaders in medical research and education.

Core Internal Medicine Didactics

Residents will receive Core Internal Medicine didactics weekly which will cover the various clinical specialties of Internal Medicine.

Business of Medicine Didactics

Didactics focused on healthcare administration and cost-effective practice management.

Patient Safety Didactics

Didactic sessions focused on core topics such as patient safety, risk management, and quality improvement.

Journal Club Sessions

Residents will present a one-hour review of relevant scientific literature as it applies to patient care.

Morbidity and Mortality Conferences

One-hour session held to discuss medical errors or near-misses in an environment that facilitates learning, encourages accountability, and promotes quality improvement and academic development.

Morning Report Conferences

Case-based conferences in which residents and attendings interact and discuss patient care, thereby allowing learners to develop their medical knowledge, diagnostic skills, treatment plan formation and patient-care competency.

Ethics Conferences

Monthly conferences held to educate residents on the foundational knowledge necessary to provide value-based, ethical patient-centered care.

Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Conferences

Semi-annual conference held to have residents and hospital staff participate in root cause analyses for significant patient safety events.

Board Review Sessions

One-hour sessions led by faculty to analyze and answer board questions using preparation materials and strategies.

Personal and Professional Development Didactics

Lecture series designed to provide residents an opportunity to reflect on their performance and facilitate their growth as healthcare leaders.

Imaging Didactics

Radiology didactics series designed to educate residents on innovations in imaging, as well as best practices in the diagnosis of a variety of medical conditions.

Wellness Didactics

Conferences designed to shed light on many of the challenges that residents face in their training and to provide them with tools to minimize burnout and stay connected to their purpose in medicine.

Simulation Lab Didactics

Residents will receive monthly didactics in our state-of-the-art simulation lab. These sessions will provide a controlled environment in which residents can run megacodes and practice various procedures.

Resident Forum Sessions

Quarterly sessions are held to facilitate communication between residents on all issues pertinent to graduate medical education.

Scholarly Activity Didactics

Didactics series designed to impart the skills relevant to evidence-based medicine and promote an intellectual curiosity that is essential for the next generation of physicians.
